Review on Bell Howell Cube Projector Drive by Steve Hardy

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Glad I found this for video projectors

After over 20 years of storage I've pulled out my mid 70's B&H 981Q cube slide projector to see if it works. It was - somehow - but there was no reliable slide feed, and if there was, then the shutter did not open reliably either. Spent a couple of hours on this before noticing the almost toothless top of the impeller. Went to YouTube (which is where I should have started) and found a video or two on the problem that led me to order this device that made it purr. again. It looks like this part will be much more durable as well. My 981Q projector is configured slightly differently than the YouTube example I found: a different lamp with no reflector and no door below. So it took me some time to figure out how to parse it. 1. First, click the latch next to the slide cube holder and lift the top to open the carousel. 2. Locate and remove the four silver flat-head screws. 3. Then you can close the bodice, turn it over or put it on its side and start knitting the bodice. 4. Once you have a slight separation, you can flip and remove the front and back covers. 5. At this point I used needle nose pliers to loosen some of the clips holding the wiring to the underside to loosen and remove them completely. 6. You now have fairly good access to the engine; By loosening the two bolts you have the motor (still attached to the wiring) and the old gearbox comes loose immediately. Putting it together is essentially the opposite, with a little extra effort to align and twist everything.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Zero
