No texture visible, no wood feel

I understand that ebony is a dense wood, but the glossy finish on this one is so thick I couldn't see any trace of the texture, but the "feel" with a wooden hook just won't do it. I have no doubt it's ebony; when I put it in the water it immediately sank to the bottom. I don't know if I would buy it again - if I had another option in 11 .5mm in wood probably wouldn't. It has no "catchy" areas so for the most part it doesn't snag on yarn fibers (tricky yarn will be finicky).
