RT-ACH17 WiFi Router

***UPDATE # - August 2019 - So I'm not sure when or how, but issues with random discounts on Android phones have gotten much better now. That almost never happens again. The router hasn't updated the firmware since April, so the likely reason for the improvement must be the phones themselves (the same phones connect daily) or removing some external interference. Anyway, it's nice to have stable and reliable WiFi on my phone again! *** UPDATE 2 - April 2019 So, right after I added the update below, I'm having an issue where all the Android phones in my house are randomly losing connection. a data connection (not all at once) to the router (you still see it because the Wi-Fi icon is still lit, but the LTE icon is lit too). This loss is usually short-lived but VERY annoying as it interrupts all internet activity on the phone. However, sometimes we have to turn Wi-Fi off and on again on the phone to get the data back. Not sure yet if it's phones (all Samsung Galaxy S devices from 5 to 9) or a router, but I don't seem to have these issues when running on my S8, so I'm guessing that it could be a router. I'll update when I know more, or if anyone reading this knows anything please let me know. I have tried restoring the phones to their original settings with no changes. ****** UPDATE I've been using the RT-ACRH17 for about a YEAR and so far so good. I only had one WiFi drop out which I can blame on the router and not my ISP (Comcast). My phone is connected to the 5GHz band and has an excellent signal even on the second floor (the router is in the basement) so the signal strength is good. I haven't made any changes to the settings recently, so I don't know if Asus fixed the reboot issue, but I do know that the firmware updated itself. I don't know when that will happen until I go to the UI and point to the new firmware. Still no dd-wrt support but otherwise a great router! ***First a quick overview: Good: WiFi speed and coverage are excellent. Features at an affordable price (this unit comes with AC1900 router hardware). Now for the not-great: Setup was subpar at best, but how often do you change router settings anyway? No ddwrt support (at least not yet). Only one USB port (but USB 3.0). So I bought this router to replace an older Linksys device (EA3500 I know, I know). I ALMOST gave up on this router and sent it back as the installation process was TERRIBLE. EVERY change required a system reboot which took AT LEAST a minute! Changing WiFi channel in 2.4GHz band = reboot, changing SSID in 5GHz band = reboot, etc. (and the change you want to ask about as well). I did a little reading on the web and found that some people found that updating the BIOS fixed this and made the reboot faster. However, I updated the BIOS and still have this problem with almost every change. Now there's no pattern to what requires a reboot and what doesn't. I hope ASUS fixes this SOON, but I don't change my settings often so it's not that big of a deal. After setting it up, I noticed that the coverage and signal strength were about the same as the EA3500, maybe a little better all around. my house. The BIG difference is in the connection speed I see. I used to see max internet speeds in the 30-50Mbps range (I have 60Mbps internet) on the first and second floors of my house (the router is in the basement) depending on the room you are in. With ASUS I now get 50-60Mbps around the house and 5-20Mbps in my backyard. I have a 2TB USB 2.0 hard drive plugged into the router's USB port and it works fine as a media server, if a bit slow (but that's the fault of the HD case as it's only USB 2.0. Actually have ALL my streaming devices (have me 9 in the house between wife and kids) see HD better (I have to wait for each device to turn off the server when it's sleeping but not the drive connected to this router) than that dedicated media server I have If I'm thinking about buying a USB 3.0 enclosure and completely disabling the media server streaming devices I have at home, I could have six or eight streaming devices at any given time (two to four laptops, two Rokus, two to four mobile phones and up to four tablets) I had up to 16 devices connected to my network at the same time to play games or stream media (I have two daughters and they both had a date last weekend with my wife and many other friends oh). I've never had any issues with the Wi-Fi disconnecting, although I did experience occasional slowdowns of around 15-20Mbps. The quad-port switch on the back provides full gigabit bandwidth for all four connected devices and the modem, so don't worry. here. As some reviewers have noted, all of the router's LEDs are located at the top of the front panel, and there are no LEDs next to the switch ports. This is not a problem for me, but maybe for some. At the heart of this router is the Qualcomm quad-core 717 MHz ARM Cortex A7 (IPQ4019) processor. The datasheet on Qualcomm's website indicates that this SoC is a 2x2 MIMO chip, while ASUS says the RT_ACRH17 is 3x3. I haven't tested this, so I don't know what's correct. But I can tell you that I've never seen four CPU cores run more than 50%, even on all the threads over the last weekend! Flash storage is a comfortable 128MB with 256MB of RAM, enough for a future third-party BIOS (hopefully). What worries me the most is this router, at least so far there is no device DDWRT support. As this is currently a new device and ASUS is still actively supporting it, this is a minor issue as the OEM firmware has decent features. However, once this device is no longer supported by ASUS, this can become a big problem as the firmware of the old router is very insecure. I'll update it as I use this router more, but feel free to ask me any questions and I'll try to answer them.
