Review on 🎨 Sargent Art 16oz Gesso: Premium White Surface Primer for Professional Artists by Amanda Castillo

Great for priming custom figures!

PICTURES: My second attempt versus my first attempt at drawing a hairstyle for my Nendoroid character. On the first try you can see how uneven and clumpy it is, as well as the tiny cracks that have appeared on the acrylic paint after it dries. When working with such products, technology is crucial! Both were painted with the same acrylic, diluted to the same consistency with water and applied with the same brush strokes, but look completely different simply because of the primer underneath. I used the same primer on both attempts. It's very thin, which is actually preferable for this type of finish. I only needed one coat which dries very quickly leaving a nice chalky texture to paint with water thinned acrylic. DO NOT USE THIS MATERIAL, especially if you are working on a model or figurine. I made this mistake on my first character because I thought it should be a lot fatter than it is. I thought thicker gesso = smoother canvas, in this case I was wrong. This gave me uneven clumps of primer that when painted over got wet again, bulged and cracked. My second attempt at creating a thin single layer with very short, even strokes was MUCH better. Acrylic paint applied well to it and gave a perfectly smooth surface. When it comes to art supplies, the technique often determines your results more than the quality of the product. It was a nice price and when used properly produced wonderful results. I have included two images, one from my first attempt, one from my second attempt, to emphasize the importance of the technique and primer when drawing the model.
