Artists Painting and Drawing

This GESSO is a good price but it is a little thinner than I would like a GESSO to be. I was looking for something heavier to prime what I need be it canvas, stones, shells etc. For a traditional canvas primer if you want to hide the painting you can try another brand. This simply means that you will spend more time applying GESSO as more coats are required to dry over time. Just a little extra work.

Perfect for my needs!

Well I'm someone who paints for fun and I've gone to a few of them to drink and paint stuff and I have a TON of canvases that I'll never hang up. This makes me want to recycle these canvases! A great idea! I was looking for the best recycling ideas and this came to my mind as an option. I tried painting my canvas white and it worked, but it was a lot of work and I used a lot of white paint that I can't spare. I tried this and it worked great! I was able to reuse my canvas and my work came out…

It's good there's something good to paint

This gesso is pretty decent. I have used it on a plain canvas as a primer and I only need to apply one coat before starting my paintings and I have also used it to cover the paintings and then paint a new painting. When I need to cover old paintings I need at least 3 coats, especially when I need to cover dark colors, it can be as little as 2 coats depending on the lighter colors. It dries quickly when used on a blank canvas, but if you need to use it for masking it will take around 30 minutes…

Thin, junk, but technically it's plaster.

This is extremely mediocre for oil paint finishes. It requires at least twice as many coats as other cheap plasters I've used to get any acceptable coverage at all, and it's thin enough to not harden without having to sand down each coat if you want a reasonably smooth finish - I mean removing deep strokes, and it was applied with a large, soft brush, washed between coats. Impasto is made for paint, not primer. Sheet. The price sucks, it works like shit, and it prevents oil-based pigments from…

Not great for customizing a Nendoroid figure

I'm by no means an expert but my experience of using this primer for customizing a Nendoroid figure wasn't great to be honest. I needed to paint the black/red part a solid medium brown, so I figured using a primer would give me an even color throughout the part. But it is so thin and liquid that it is very difficult to get a smooth surface. I compared using primer and paint alone (acrylic paint diluted with water) and the end result was pretty much the same. In addition, if you paint over the…

Emergency Buy

Reviewed after some use. I find this gesso thick, not thin or runny. It dries matt and is very porous and absorbent. My oil colors absorb instantly and I cannot repeat or alter them. Also, the oil paint peels off when I try to repaint an area that I'm letting dry. I'm not sure why this formula looks like chalk or plaster. But that's not what I've used in the past. First review: Sure, sure, who do you think will buy plaster of paris in an emergency? OK I know. I needed this for a painting very…

Great for priming custom figures!

PICTURES: My second attempt versus my first attempt at drawing a hairstyle for my Nendoroid character. On the first try you can see how uneven and clumpy it is, as well as the tiny cracks that have appeared on the acrylic paint after it dries. When working with such products, technology is crucial! Both were painted with the same acrylic, diluted to the same consistency with water and applied with the same brush strokes, but look completely different simply because of the primer underneath. I…
