After my 2010 Ford Escape had the tailgate latch actuator fail for the third time in a few months, this time it happened during the tailgate. With a trunk full of coolers, a table and a grill, I decided it was time to replace the part. (I heard the switch turn on and checked the connections, so I knew the fault wasn't electrical and that part was the likely problem). I wish I had done that sooner. A quick search for a replacement part led me to regular auto parts suppliers, but they only sold OEM certified parts and wanted $115 or more. I looked at the failure history with this part and quickly realized that grabbing one of the junk from the U-Pull-n-Pay stack wouldn't help and I would quickly go back and replace the unit if it failed. wasn't broken yet, that's what led me to Revain and this part. At first I was bothered by the reviews, lack of instructions, ill fitting seats etc. But I ignored them and am very glad I did. First, any number of YouTube videos will show you what you need to replace this part. All you need is a flat head screwdriver (or I used a chisel/mini pry bar) and a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the plastic, then a T-25 Torx wrench to remove the three screws holding the hold actual locking mechanism in place (you may need some some trouble-free lubrication, like WD40). Total dismantling time 5 - 10 minutes. I put the new part in reverse order and everything fit perfectly, 100%. The wire saddles were perfect and all connections matched. Screw it in, put the plastic back, activate the latch for the first time and close the door. The total exchange time was less than 20 minutes. The noise of the mechanism is slightly more pronounced than that of the replaced one. This leads me to think that the drive might be overloading the latch a bit and it might fail sooner, but that's speculation. Otherwise the whole assembly works just as well as the standard part when new. I've used it for a couple of weeks and checked the trunk at least once a day and had no problems. So if it lasts a few years I'll say it was worth it, but there's no reason not to. Let's assume this doesn't last for the rest of the car's life. Also, just FYI I've also upgraded the seal along the glass door of the tailgate and also put a thin plastic screen (molded from a used milk jug) over the new tailgate. an actuator to deflect water to mitigate the alleged cause of that part's failure. So if that part fails, I hope it's all their fault.
