This disc is not secure. I've used Western Digital hard drives for years with no problems, but without proper product development/quality control they seem to have gotten on the SSD train too quickly. It started corrupting my data from day one. The drive itself does not detect bad sectors, and running CHKDSK and performing a low-level format has no effect. Based on the symptoms I've observed (corrupt blocks in image files, weird color blocking in PDFs, etc.), I suspect the drive is just littered with bad bits. They are still writable so the drive doesn't mark them as bad and just keep using them. Unfortunately, this is no good when you need data integrity. Luckily, I discovered the issue on the second day and my data was safely stored elsewhere, so unlike some others I didn't experience total data loss. But I could easily do it, and that worries me. SSD is not a new concept and companies have been building solid SSD storage solutions for years - my previous computer had a primary SSD that worked great for over 4 years. That a well-known company like Western Digital can't figure this out in 2021 is a little worrying. But I could easily do it, and that worries me.
