Grip in chip pins and other places I want to connect. The springs are good and strong. I've soldered about 50 of these with good success. Metal tends to make the solder "roll" and roll: take a file or dremel tool and lightly sand the metal surface of the alligator clip handle where you will be soldering the wire connection and they work like a charm.
