Problems with NCV and Temperature settings

I really wanted to like this gauge because I've always respected the Amprobe for years, but it's having problems, particularly with the NCV setting. I thought it was a defect in the first one but ordered a second one with the same problem. The manual shows that some sort of AC voltage should appear on the NCV until it is found to be over 90 volts. At this point "OL" will be displayed. Both I tried showed "OL" all the time (even with no voltage). The beep seemed to work on the NCV when it recognized AC, but the display never changed. Also, the auto shut off is too brief to try to measure temperature changes on HVAC. There must be a way to turn it off, but I haven't found a way. Also, it doesn't remember degrees C and degrees F when you turn it off and on again. By default it always returns degrees Celsius (which is a real pain when it goes to sleep and you need to reset it while trying to measure a long temperature change). I think the smaller model (AM-510) will suffice as almost everything else works fine.
