Banglijian Rechargeable Hearing Aids, model BLJ-707Hearing aids are often abbreviated as PSAP (Personal Sound Amplification Products). They are unfamiliar items to many potential users including myself. When this PSAP was received, it seemed a good time to learn more about hearing aids. Before testing could begin, the batteries in the two amplifiers plus a larger battery in the charging case needed a full charge. A power adapter (transformer) and cable are included for this job. Three lights on the charging case indicate the status of charging (see pic). When I initially connected AC current to the case, all three lights glowed orange. Charging had begun. After two hours, the two end lights turned off. These automatically disconnect as the batteries in the amplifiers become full. When the amplifiers are not used, they can remain plugged into the charging slots.A center light on the charging case turns green when the larger battery inside the case reaches full capacity. The case then becomes a mobile charging station. Product information states that it stores sufficient electricity to recharge both ear amplifiers five times. This feature allows the hearing aids to remain functional when traveling, camping, or otherwise unable to access the electrical grid. The hearing aid kit includes eight pairs of ear domes of various sizes and shapes. See the photo below that shows the domes included with this product. The instructions suggest trying each type and size from the smallest to the largest to find which one works best.Researching wellness devices turned up these general tidbits for fitting your hearing aids correctly. A dome too small can feed sound to the amplifier causing it to squeal. Domes too large will feel uncomfortable and may cause soreness in the ear. When a dome fits correctly, it will be slightly larger than the ear canal. This allows it to remain in place without falling out. After a few minutes of wearing a correctly sized dome, you will forget that it is in your ear. After trying various domes, the 12mm Closed Ear insert was chosen for this review. I positioned both amplifies in my ears, adjusted the volume four clicks above off, and immediately the sound environment in the room changed. Because of the amplification, I became aware of more sounds around me and they were louder. My attention focused on everyday noises. These are sounds so common that they are ignored. For example, hand-washing. Amplified, the act of rubbing soapy hands together and rinsing in a stream of tap water created sounds that were crispy and crackly. They sounded similar to squeezing the air out of a plastic water bottle.Hearing my voice became a new experience. Not only did I hear my speech in normal fashion, the microphone on the hearing aid picked it up too. The words were amplified and heard once more. In effect, my voice was heard twice, like a slightly out-of-sync echo. This sound reminded me of singing in the shower where the voice has rich, vibrant qualities because it is reflected off nearby surfaces.I compare this initial experience of using hearing aids to the moment when prescription glasses were worn for the first time. The appearance of yard trees that I saw every day had changed. Instead of a green mass swaying in the breeze, individual leaves were waving at me. The hearing aid did the same by increasing the details contained in sounds.Does this device increases my quality of hearing? I do not know the frequencies this device can or cannot amplify. Neither can I measure any distortion or lack of it introduced by the solid-state circuitry. What I am sure of is this: The sounds heard during testing were without background humming, static, or any introduced noises. Sounds that I did hear were louder, more distinct, and definitely more interesting. Will I wear the hearing aids for hours every day? Probably not because my day is not spent involved in situations that require critical hearing. On the other hand, I do not wear my glasses for hours every day either. Still, I would not leave home without them. Time will tell if I feel the same about the hearing aids.
