Looks good for $17

I bought this to install on my boat. I was looking for a USB charger that would not consume power when no USB device is connected. After hours of searching on Revain, I've found that there isn't an option for this. They either have some kind of built-in light or, like this one, a digital display. Thought it would be the next best thing as it has a switch and at least the display is somewhat useful. I just checked the parasitic current draw of the display and it's 16.02 mA at 12.67 volts. The reading seems to be fairly accurate. My fluke meter read 12.856 volts and my meter read 13.0 volts. I also tested it with a Cen-Tech meter and it showed 12.67 volts while the meter read 12.8 volts. The sensor value seems to be slightly higher. I checked the output from the USB port. When my phone was plugged in and charging, the amp read 451 mA at 12.67 volts. To get a rough estimate of the amount of current going into the phone, I multiplied 451 mA by 12.67 volts (battery at the time) = 5.714 watts. I divided this by 5 volts assuming the phone output is 5 volts. I can't confirm that, but it should be close. This equates to 1.142 amps for a phone. There are some losses due to the process of converting 12 volts to 5 volts. I don't know what it is, but if there were no losses the current would be 1,142 amps. I plugged in the iPad Mini along with my phone and the Fluke meter read 1.1 amps at 12.67 volts. this corresponds to 13.937 watts / 5 volts = 2.787 amperes. Again, the conversion loss is not taken into account. Revain's sales/info page states a maximum of 1.5 amps per USB. According to my calculations, that's pretty close to the declared amperage. As far as build quality goes, it seems pretty good. My only concern is the durability of the harmonica around the switch. I'm willing to bet it gets worse with prolonged sun exposure. There is another tip for wiring 18 AWG to the block and then 16 AWG to each device. That's true and it looks a bit strange. It's backward thinking, but I'm sure everything will be fine. If there is any concern I will replace the cable with my own. Either way, I need to run power and ground wires to the unit.
