I purchased this hat because of the opening in the back which would allow you to wear the hat for sun protection while also having your hair up in a pony tail. The fabric has absolutely no stretch to it and the width of the opening is so tight, it is impossible to fit a finger in to grasp any hair to pull through the opening, let alone a pony tail. If all you need is a regular hat for sun protection, this hat would be fine for that purpose. If you are thinking of purchasing this hat to also be able to wear your hair in a pony tail, with the hope of keeping cool on a hot day, I would look elsewhere. This function on the hat is absolutely useless.
