We screwed the post to the posts and didn't have to use the dowels provided. To make the process easier we: - used a nail finder - marked the holes for the first post with a pencil - pre-drilled the holes for just one post - screwed the first post in place - used a broom handle and spirit level to ensure posts would be horizontal - Mark second holes with a pencil, pre-drill and ensure evenness - Pre-drilled holes for the second post - Screw on the second post. The additional preparation steps took only a few minutes. Drilling and leveling and in the end we saved tons of time by making sure we didn't make any mistakes and making the process smooth and easy. The board is very safe, gives the room a "surfer vibe" and I no longer have to move the board to suck the room or worry about it tipping over or tripping. It's easy to get off the wall and surf once you set up the board you're using. In our case, we put up a decorative board and the ones we surf on are in ugly pockets to have handy when needed.
