This is exactly what I needed and my two cats used it straight away and love it. Also keeps dirt inside. The only thing that can definitely be improved is that after removing the lid, it's not that easy to put it back on. The slots/grooves that meet the top to bottom are very thin and there is very little chance of fitting them the first time. My son doesn't have the patience for this so I always see when he has cleaned the box because the lid comes off by itself. When I put it back on I literally have to keep one hand on the slot that the top goes in and maneuver the top with the other to slowly slide the right and then the left into the bottom. Even with such a neat top-to-bottom arrangement, it still falls out of place, but I'll just go back and do it again. It would be amazing if they could just make the whole thing thicker and the connecting slot bigger like other closed shells that literally just connect without a second thought.
