For many years I have been looking for the right way to sharpen stones for axes. I enjoy restoring old axes and often use them for chopping wood and felling trees. I've tried all types of ax washers over the years, but almost every other on the market is too crude. Norton, Lansky, UK and I even made my own by carving a bench stone I had. I just wasn't happy with any of them. But this puck is great. In JIS standards this is about 400/700. The mixture of abrasives is really unique here. You only need the white/thin side to touch up the edge. With the rough side you can very quickly remove small chips and restore a dull edge. It's a fast-cutting stone, it's hard, wears out slowly, doesn't boil quickly. It doesn't load much at all. When it starts to boil I just dip it back in the water and rub it with my finger and any metal particles just rub off. Personally, I still prefer something more subtle, but that's not necessary. The fine side of it gives a cloudy finish that's perfectly fine for most uses, and it shaves the thin side of this stone down. I made my own 1000/3000 out of a cheap bench stone I had and I use it to trim the edge and finish it to a semi-mirror finish and then the green composite sling. In general, Baryonyx absolutely mastered this puck. Since this thing is so durable, I believe it will last forever. Although I can take a spare just in case.
