This crushed coral is great for balancing water hardness and therefore pH. I sprinkled a very thin layer on my white gravel. Shredded Coral is slightly darker than white (it has a very slight pink tinge depending on the light), but makes no noticeable difference. He buffered my pool by adding calcium carbonate to the water and the kH has been good ever since. The pH was constant at 6.5-7.0. I assume the more you put in the tank the higher the kH and therefore the pH, but for my purposes 6.5-7 is fine. I had trouble maintaining the pH (it kept falling). Get rid of Alkaline Buffer Energy or pH Up that only work temporarily and buy this product. It works and doesn't take much. Just remember not to add all at once, but little by little to avoid stressing and killing the fish. The product may leave smoky water behind, but this will go away.
