I have three cats and a bad back so I needed a vacuum that could suck up cat hair and spilled food well and wasn't as heavy as I could not carry it up and down stairs. This shark is lightweight so I can easily carry it up and down stairs. And it takes everything! My carpets are back to their cream color, I almost forgot what color they were. Suitable for both thick pile and flat carpets. I don't use it on vinyl floors as it has a hammer that can damage hardwood or vinyl floors. (My old vacuum left scratches on the office floor!) It's not as small as my electric broom, but it's small enough to easily fit in a closet. For a small vacuum it's also pretty tough, I can wash the carpets in the whole house (800 square feet) before I have to empty the dust box. Emptying is easy, it has a 'door' at the bottom of the chamber so you can hold it over the bin and just toss dirt in. It doesn't completely get rid of dust that blows up in the air, but it's not as bad as my old vacuum where emptying the chamber was a two-step process. I really like this vacuum cleaner!
