I am setting up a vivarium for my grandson. I was planning to collect some lower animals from our area in Southeast Alaska for my grandson to observe. I mixed Josh's Frogs Biobedding and ABG substrates. I placed them with a barrier over Josh's false bottom. There's nothing but a flat stone that I washed and baked in the oven. This morning I found a miniature snail crawling on a rock. It's not even 1mm, but cute as a button. Its armor is iridescent and flat like a tire. As you can imagine, I'm not upset about the snail. I even put some fish flakes on a rock and sprinkled them over the aquarium. I'm worried that other creatures might appear in the substrate, which I really don't care. The substrates themselves are good quality mixes. I gave Josh's Frogs substrates 5 stars because I'm happy with them even with the snail. I understand that many other people have different goals than I do, and they would be appalled at a stowaway. I wrote this review because I thought others might want to know about the possibility of a lost hitchhiker. First update: Besides some natural decorations we now have some native plants, isopods and the black beetle. Our snail has grown to 3 mm. He has a very dark body. After some research I think it is some kind of glass snail. It doesn't look like it's going to be very big. Anything with Josh's substrates will definitely thrive in our terrarium. Update 7/13: It's been about 6 months since we created our vivarium. Numerous isopods dug multiple tunnels through the substrate, turning it into uneven ups and downs. This became an issue when the base of the higher decor became unstable. So I figured it would be a good idea to turn the floor over and level the surface a bit. Another surprise! Now I know why Josh's Frogs calls it BioBedding. In addition to the first garlic glass snails, of which I now count nine, I found young earthworms and small centipedes. Based on the research, they all appear to be healthy additions to my intended isopod and springtail cleaning team. After this upgrade I bought more Josh's Frogs Bio Bedding to build another vivarium.
