After years of using self-adhesive felt pads on chairs and seeing the mount fail, I decided a long time ago that I needed a more permanent method of attachment. I excluded the guys with nails as I've seen others use them and split a chair leg by hammering a nail. Screw-in types are less common and require a pilot hole to avoid this problem, but I find them to be by far the best solution. Felt wears out over time and I prefer a plastic backing over metal to protect the floor if that happens. This is at least my third purchase of these protectors and I am willing to put in the extra effort required to secure the pilot hole. Overall I'm very happy with them, although it would be nice if they were also available in dark brown plastic to better match the finishes on many of my chairs.
