Great head unit

This unit deserves a review. I bought this for my little sister to give her a backup camera and bluetooth for her car. But dude, this is better than I expected. I have a Pioneer nex1400 in my car and this sub $100 unit charges faster and is more responsive than mine. Yes I understand this is a 2021 model as opposed to my old 2000 stereo. Audio clarity is crisp, as soon as reverse gear is engaged the screen will automatically switch to reverse and the touchscreen will be responsive. All properties are comparable to my pioneer. This device has built-in Apple CarPlay. So once you use the Lightning cable, plug the USB into the device, and navigate to the vehicle connection icon, all phone usage is right on the screen, and the Maps app is nice and big to see your directions. This is a very impressive stereo. So what are the downsides of this double din device? The size is very slim and depending on the mount for your car, this device may be too small for it. I put it in a civilian car so there weren't holes in the metal mount to fit something this thin. I had to drill my own holes in the metal bracket to install this head unit. Once connected to an iPhone, Siri works but is limited to what it can do while driving. I may need to take the parking brake cable and tie it to the ground to see if it gives me access to all of the device's functions while driving. Maybe for safety reasons it should be like production cars? There are virtually no instructions other than how to connect this main unit. If you've learned about stereo and are tech-savvy, the learning curve is about 10 minutes. Radio presets can be changed by going to the desired station and pressing and holding one of the slots. That's about a second or two longer than using the iPhone to shake the app's screen. Finding radio stations is a bit more difficult as you press left or right on the touchscreen to select a station. The screen becomes sensitive because a touch takes it to the next channel, and a long press puts the device into channel search mode. This is a bit due to the missing user manual and the fact that I used the touchscreen like my pioneer. car game. The connection with Bluetooth is fast. Once selected, it will appear in your Bluetooth list on iPhone. Select it and it will automatically connect. When you connect an iPhone, phone, text, maps, podcasts, etc. become the default. When a call comes in, it opens in CarPlay but then switches to the Bluetooth screen. So I unplugged the iPhone and now just use it connected. Phone calls, text messages, and maps stay on screen when you receive them and when you speak to Siri. I haven't tried the USB mass storage feature that lets you watch movies, but that probably requires parking the car. I also plan to try a subwoofer as the built in amplifier allows for the use of a subwoofer. But I'm sure it will work fine as the speakers sound clearer and louder than the stock unit. Overall I am impressed with this stereo. All of the hardware buttons on the device are responsive, as is the touchscreen. It takes a little getting used to as there are no instructions included, but it's certainly rich and comparable to my Pioneer and my brother's alpine two din blocks. Good product!
