Review on 🚲 Trunk Mount Carrier - Thule Passage by Shawn Tolbert

Not suitable for all bicycles

Unfortunately returned. We typically transport our bikes using a hitch carrier and our half-ton polyurethane truck. But we want to save truck miles and transport bikes in our Buick Encore, which is also a lot cheaper to drive. I did a lot of research and figured this stretcher would work. It was easy to set up and easy to install on the machine. The problem occurred when trying to park the bikes. We have Trek steel frame hybrid mountain bikes. I had to buy adapters for both (men's and women's bikes) but even with these it was difficult to get the bikes onto the stands. I had to wedge in a bit and work on the bike a bit to get the first bike on before it fell into the cradles. I couldn't start a second bike at all. The cradles were too close together. Found a review stating that with a bit of patience and turning the bassinet can be moved. I could move them, but it wasn't easy. I was finally able to put on the second wheel, but it took a lot of effort. And I had to take the saddlebags off the bike before I could get that far. What a nuisance. After we finally got the second bike on, we found that the top bar of the trunk had detached from the window and was no longer secured. We just couldn't pull these straps tight enough to hold the carrier against the window. The wheels were too heavy. The description says it has a 105# capacity, but our bikes have a capacity of about 35# each. The carrier should have handled these bikes with ease. This luggage rack is really made for two light road bikes without a lot of extras. All in all I spent 3 hours getting this thing up and running. We will continue to use the truck to transport our bikes. Pros Well done Very easy to set up, assemble and disassemble Cons Not suitable for heavy steel frame bikes Very difficult to mount bikes with narrow frame angles, even with adapter bars Not enough space for two touring bikes, especially with accessories and saddlebags. The pros got 2 stars.
