I bought this to replace the charcoal filter above my stove - the fan is not venting to the outside. It was easy enough to disassemble the previous filter and I ran it through the dishwasher along with the grease filter to fully degrease it. This material is pretty easy to install. Overall, it's not as char-covered as the original, but better than cheap replacement filters that cost about the same (per pair) as this entire sheet. So for me it comes out somewhere in the middle. I tested it 4 ways: 1) a cheap replacement from another manufacturer (thin coating). It was found that the smell of cooking was not filtered, so to speak, 2) this is a single-layer seal. It is noted that the smell has decreased slightly, the difference is not big - only noticeable, 3) This is a seal, a double layer. It was found to reduce odor even further and it was important to 4) add this gasket, double layer aquarium activated carbon between them. The smell was found to be so strong as if I had been cooking about an hour ago and not now. Regardless of the filter method, fat is always a problem. It is impossible to fry/cook food at high room temperature and not have greasy smoke if the hood is not ventilated! So the goal was simply to reduce the smell. I'm willing to pay about $10 for this pad and add some activated charcoal (preferably baking soda in the fridge every day) - this sheet should last about 2 years (vacuum sealed) and I'm getting decent results. I'm not willing to pay $40 for OEM replacement filters every 6 months ($160 for 2 years!) to get decent results. It is common knowledge that unvented hoods are not that good. It's an inexpensive way to at least make it work as it should, no worse.
