Review on Supersonic SC-28 DVD Player - Powerful 2-Channel Device by Nicholas Serafini

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Plays many file types but will not play DVD

I can confirm this will not play region 1 encoded US DVDs. Supersonic has not responded to my email regarding this. It usually plays recorded DVD+R, SVCD and some AVI files. I haven't had any luck playing any of the popular MP4 formats. It works with USB portable hard drives and SD cards, but it is difficult to find files on the hard drive with many folders and files. It doesn't find them all and only shows 8 characters of the filename. I got it for the VGA output and portability to use with my AAXA p2 projector. I assumed VGA would give better picture quality than A/V output. Theoretically yes, but the VGA connection is poor and suffers from heavy electrical noise from the device itself. Wavy electrical lines and noise during disc playback degrade the overall picture quality. With the A/V output, the noise doesn't seem to be as noticeable. It's not the cable (tried more than one), it's the block. Switching from VGA to RCA is done manually and via an on-screen menu. Obviously the plastic is made for low cost rather than quality, the plastic seems cheap so I will carefully pack it for the trip. The LED display on the front edge shows elapsed time etc and is helpful. If you're looking for a basic portable DVD player, this isn't it. If you need an MP4 player, there are smaller options with flash memory. If you want to play your own SVCD, DVD+R, MP3 or MPEG files from disc or USB, this will help at a good price. Viewing only pictures from a memory card on the TV also works. I will find a use for it despite the distorted feature set (DVD compatible)
