Well-Made, Medium-Firm Insert

Of all the purchases you should probably make in person, a pillow insert is high on the list if you're fussy about such things as loft, softness and squoosh factor, since they're so subjective. My hopes for this online purchase were that a 17" insert would fill a 16" pillow cover well, not sag, collapse or flatten when someone leaned against it on the sofa, and that it would hold the obligatory karate-chop. I bought two, and they aced all three requirements. The inserts are generously filled and were shipped rolled in a plastic sleeve, which made it easier to insert them into the pillow covers in their still-rolled form once the plastic was removed. I'd say they're medium-firm, and the 17 inch size filled a 16 inch cover all the way to the points for a nice rounded shape that holds up well against a determined lounger. They are definitely not as soft as pillows with a higher down-to-feather ratio, and mine don't have that satisfying squoosh, probably because they are tightly packed into the smaller-size covers. They're comfortable, though, and shapeable. I suspect a larger size cover than mine could take an insert that's 2" bigger and feel softer. So far, there have been none of those irritating, pokey feathers, but my pillow covers are made of a tight weave, it's early days yet, and the pillows don't get hard use. No smell, nice white cover material, these inserts fit my decorative pillow use perfectly, but might not suit if you need a very soft feel.

Pros
  • They're also a great option for those who suffer from neck or back pain
Cons
  • May not be as durable as synthetic or down-alternative pillows
