Review on Neoteck HiFi Headphone Amplifier with Two-Stage Gain Switch, Portable Aluminum Matte Surface for 3.5mm Headsets by Michael Mayes

This amp can blow your tunes into your headphones and still sound clean!

When I bought this amp I had doubts that it would meet my needs. Young! Am I wrong? Despite the fact that the instructions say it only puts out 40 milliwatts, it will certainly be able to play your tunes without distortion. I certainly wouldn't use it for anything other than a headphone amp, but as a headphone amp I was very surprised that it exceeded my expectations! My Sennheiser HD6 Mix headphones have an impedance of 150 ohms which some cheaper amps may have a hard time driving to a decent volume, this amp has no problem. Good job neotech! As an electrical engineer I should have known that. So I took a tour of the inside of the unit. This amp uses two venerable Burr Brown (now TI) OPA604 operational amplifier ICs. Rigid and precise. Engineered for high quality sound amplification. The HD6 has pretty damn deep bass at 6Hz and it can be quite boomy. They had no volume when plugged directly into my computer. So I bought this amp to pair with a Behringer MiniFBQ EQ to reduce the boom a bit and I'm happy with both. You will need some adapters if you want to use the MiniFBQ as it is a studio EQ that only has 1/4" and RCA jacks. If you use a good quality USB charger, you can leave it alone. It's constantly connected to the network, so you won't run out of charge at the wrong time. No noise, no hum. I use an old iPhone charger. I tried plugging it into my computer and it was noise galore. Don't go there.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A shady purchase for the elderly
