My fish don't seem to mind. After a week the water quality is good. I try to change the filter every two weeks. Although the instructions say it can take a month. Super easy, no worries about dirty coal or sediment. No cloudy water. Eheim is the best canister filter I've tried and probably the only one I trust. There may be more expensive and complex ones, but the eheim external filter tank serves my purpose well. 4 stars for $9-$10 unless on sale. They probably cost around 2-3 cents to make.
