Review on Matthews Fan Company IR5HLK TB 60 52Ceiling by Jasmine Rogers

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good fan, easy installation (one problem, see details). Recommended

Having lived in hot climates for decades, the idea of NOT having ceiling fans in bedrooms and common areas seems silly to me. It took me about 10 years to realize that there is some value in investing in quality fans and not just the standard building material used in homes. My most recent project was to install a ceiling fan in an 8 foot low room and try to match the existing style of the room as much as possible. After some thought I settled on a 60" Matthews IR5HLK-TB-WA-60 Irene Hugger outdoor ceiling fan with LED lighting and remote and wall control. Irene was my second purchase of a Matthews fan. How did it all go? in two Boxes, with motor and light block in one box and blades in the other.Like many modern fans, Irene is equipped with a DC motor.Although the DC motor is said to be more energy efficient, it is not compatible with traditional fan speed controllers (more on that later). The main board , the motor, remote control receiver and housing are easy to wire up and connect.I managed to cram a Z-Wave micro switch into a service box and I chose not to connect the light to the receiver unit. This allows my Z -Wave hug control the light module without having to deal with the remote control. This also allows a single switch/scene A controller (not connected to a load) controls the light from the wall. Problems arose when it came time to mount the blades. They sent the correct blades, or they had a manufacturing defect (radius cut not reaching the base of each blade), or they sent the wrong ones. The light module was attached without the blades as the room lights were removed to accommodate the fan. I contacted the seller through Revain and explained the problem. The response I received wasn't promising at first, but I insisted on a photo. When they were satisfied the blades were wrong, they sent a replacement. The new blades snapped perfectly into place with no fit or balance issues. It's subjective, but I think the fan looks great. The fan moves a fair amount of air during operation. The light module doesn't put out much light (similar to a 60W or 75W incandescent bulb) so you'll likely need other overhead lights or bulbs. The remote control is TERRIBLE and doesn't match the performance of the fan. It does work though, but I was happy to take responsibility for lighting control from the console. I used to get an extra remote and hooked it up to a Raspberry PI so fan speed, direction etc could be controlled with my home automation hub (Homeseer 3) and I'll probably do that here soon too. As for the fan, I'm very happy. This is a well-made unit that also looks attractive when installed close to the ceiling. This item is quite expensive, but it's probably good to think of it as an item that will depreciate in value over the years. highlighted.
