Didn't last very long

The thermometer lasted about 9 months with almost daily use (taking milk temperature for cappuccino). Now the temperature is 20 degrees higher than the actual temperature. It was probably a bit high for a while, but 20 degrees is no use. I hand washed it without submerging it in water and there is no sign of water getting into the thermometer. But it says it can be submerged in water, but when I opened it to change the battery I saw that there was no O-ring to protect it from water. I expected it to last longer.
