The GPS function works great. This is the second one I've had after using the old model for about 7 years. The GPS function is simple, but brings you back to the trailhead or camp very reliably. However, the compass function just sucks (which isn't related to the GPS function - I think it has sort of a normal magnetic compass in addition to the GPS, which translates to the LED screen as a typical compass function). In many ways it would be better not to even include it in the device because it is so inaccurate. Well, on my old one, which still worked, it only consistently showed about 15 degrees from where a normal compass would point. This one I just got is permanently off, about 90 to 130 degrees. Sometimes it happens like after I put the batteries in for the first time last night. But later that night and this morning it is pointing southeast and will not stop pointing southeast. So this one is back and I'll try another one. But in my experience, that was always the case with two. The compass is weak and not a reason to buy this device. The GPS is basic and not very accurate, but it's reliable and works for me every time.
