Review on EBC Brakes USR7238 Sport Slotted by Troy Early

Revainrating 3 out of 5

They worked great at first, I used them according to the instructions.

I purchased and installed these with EBC Greenstuff pads and brand new calipers on my 2007 4Runner about 16 months ago. They worked great initially, I fitted them to the manufacturer's instructions, had no problems and they held up well. After about 6 months my truck started to experience steering wheel vibrations which were linked to a deformed rotor or uneven deposit of pad material. I don't see any uneven deposits on the pads that could warp, or just not enough deposits to be noticed. What really struck me was the very uneven wear on the rotor surface, forming rings of variable wear around the rotor. This uneven wear is particularly noticeable in the innermost area of the wear zone. To me this is an obvious design flaw as the slot does not extend far enough to the center of the rotor where it should cover the full wear area. This quote from the description "Another great feature of slotted rotors is that they maintain flat and parallel pad wear and avoid the pick-up or abrasion gouges common to non-slotted rotors" is totally incorrect for these rotors as the slot does not span the pad wear extends beyond inside. You now have a lot of rudder vibration when braking. Sufficient where it is very uncomfortable to stop quickly and requires a lot of steering under hard braking. I have a 4" lift and 33" A/T tires with 20" aluminum wheels on my 4Runner. This adds a lot of extra rotating weight that may or may not be considered when designing these rotors. I tow too. In the summer I ride jet skis and carry a lot of people and gear year-round, and I ride very, very hard (more like a spirited limousine ride) and in variable weather and year-round mountain passes off the Colorado Ridge. I may not have the same issues with the stock wheel/tire combo or less spirited driving, but I bought heavy-duty brake discs to allow for efficient braking. I will replace them immediately as the Greenstuff pads are completely worn out in 16 months (20,000 miles). I'll spend some more money on Stoptech Cryo Slotted rotors and see if they get any better.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
