At Settlers of Catan game night last month, some friends brought over Forbidden Island and we tried it out and it was a blast! (We love Catan, but sometimes we need a break in the form of a co-op game - too many tempers could flare up, if you know what I mean!) I looked on Best Buy to buy Island and saw this sequel and decided to try this one instead and I am very satisfied with this decision!-In Island, you lose tiles as they flood, while in Desert you have sand build up on tiles. In Island, you can fix (unflood) tiles in a single turn, but on Desert you could be facing a tile with unlimited sand built up!-In Island, you know where you are going to get your four artifacts, but on Desert you have to uncover clue tiles that help you find the artifacts (they can be on any tile; the hint tiles are lines of longitude and Latitude and where they cross on the board is where you will find that artifact.)-In Island you have as long as it takes to win - the only time limit is through the flooded tiles, while on Desert you have a time limit with tiles using up all the sand pieces (when they run out you lose) but you also deal with water levels for each character (and they are different for each player) that must be refilled or you all lose. This is a really fun game - and really hard! I know that timing and strategy and cards all come together to make each game harder or easier than any other but we've only won once so far in three games and on that one game we forgot to draw four (instead of three) for two turns when we forgot that the heat level was up. So our only win is tainted with an asterisk! Very tough! In Island, we won most of the times we've played. So if you are looking for a challenge with similar play mechanics I recommend this to you highly!
