The reason for 4 starts is an instruction. In fact there is none. They supply a book with about 30 or 40 6 or 8 barcodes per page, each with a word or two underneath. If you connect your computer before scanning the USB barcode, nothing will be scanned. When you scan a barcode in a book, you need to cover all other codes on the same page. Once set up, the thing works very well. The scan volume is about an 8 inch cube and works equally well both horizontally and vertically. We just put it next to the receptionist and after breaking the staff items on the glass it works very well. A note: if any of your UPCs are short, they will be padded with zeros up to 12 digits. which our old scanner couldn't do, so we had to update the scan codes for some items.
