Review on ⚡️ 250W Intelligent DC DC PSU Power Supply Unit M4-ATX-HV with 6-34V Input by Roberto Strumer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Worked 3 years before death, impressive

I've had one in CarPC for the last 2.5 years. He survived the heat of the Atlanta summer and the cold of the Ohio winter. Considering my trunk temps topped 120F on a couple of bad days in Atlanta, that's actually pretty remarkable. It features a Core i3-2120 processor with a Solid State Drive (OS) and a 3TB WD Green hard drive (music). I actually thought the hard drive would die first, but it doesn't. I realized something was wrong when the CarPC started freezing intermittently or the mouse worked, but nothing else happened. It wasn't until I got to my place of work that the power supply "popped" out. Well, that explained all the instabilities and was much cheaper and less time consuming to fix than motherboards, CPUs and the necessary OS reinstalls. I had no problem setting a 30 second delay for the computer to shut down. I've never bothered to set up sleep modes as they never work on laptops, let alone crazy devices like the CarPC. To make the power supply more user-friendly, I integrated a 3-position DIP switch on the dashboard to have normal mode, always-on mode and never-on mode. Works great if your computer freezes and you need to shut it down manually, or if you have a lengthy process and want it to run independently of turning the car on and off (e.g. restoring a database of 65,000 songs in Centrafuse ). To be honest, given the abuse this CarPC has taken, I drive about 20+ hours a week, I'm really glad this power supply has lasted so long. The only downside is that unlike the HD, MoBo, or CPU, this part isn't available in retail outlets. So I had to spend the night over a new PSU. There's no way I'm going to drive my car without my tunes any more than I've done before!

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
