The 14 volt limit seems like a hard number. The electrical system of most vehicles typically runs between 13.8 and 14.7 volts. I have 14.2 and the charger cut off when the engine was running, worked fine when the engine was stopped. I added a couple of diodes to the power wires to introduce a small voltage drop and now it works great, but it would be better if the device itself was better designed to withstand the very predictable case of in-car installation.
