The wick burns too fast

I am new to wax printing and wanted to personalize my letters to my pen pal. I wish I had done more research on casting methods; You can either melt the wax chunks in a spoon and pour them out from there, or drip straight from the wax stick like this one. I'm not sure if this is user error or not, but I'm having a very hard time getting the wax to melt. I tried rotating the stick, melting at different angles, nothing helps. I'll leave a coin-sized puddle on the side, and then the flame will go out. I have to hold the lighter on a stick the whole time to get enough wax on the side, but then I can't control the drip well or I burn my fingers. (and I've tried several colors, it's not just shimmery wax sticks) I want the wick to be some material other than cotton; it just burns too fast and isn't strong enough to go through the wax. I know this method is time consuming and almost meditative for some, but if I have to light the fuse every 5 seconds (no exaggeration) then it doesn't make sense, does it? I think it could be some kind of ritual. I will use the wax anyway as it is good quality. Probably just cut into pieces and melt. 3 stars because the wax was delivered as advertised. I only wish I had bought a wax melter kit that came with a spoon. Seems to be a more beginner-friendly option.
