Cannot handle 300w load

This inverter is sold with a 300w rating, cranking power is 600w. I hooked it up to a machine that draws 2.8 amps at 110 volts (308 watts?) needed. The machine did not start and the inverter kept shutting down. According to the user manual, you can't connect more than 150 watts.
