Take your time, watch the video, use genuine Kohler parts

We have a 9 year old Kohler K-4620 two-piece toilet. The first thing you need to do is find the tank back panel number so Kohler can identify specific parts. Our toilet worked intermittently, and at first we thought of just replacing the muffler, but when I got into the tank, the plastic parts of the flush valve fell apart about an inch from the bottom, so we decided to replace all the internals with original Kohler ones . Flush valve kit and slide part number 85406 and GP fill valve 1138930. I've never had to replace a flush valve but watching the video showed it was like a DIY project. I'm not a big fan of the triangular spacer between the tank and bowl, but it is. All went well with the removal of the old bolts (after the tank was completely dry and the flexible line was loosened). Having a plastic tub big enough for a tank helped. To my surprise, my channel locks were small for the 2.5" plastic nut that holds the inflation valve. I had a 2.25" bore and didn't mind taking out the old parts because they would end up in the trash anyway. Went to Lowe's and bought the largest channel lock I've ever seen with a 4" hole, but if you give this new nut a good final twist with the pipe in the hole, the larger hole works. It was easy to fit three nipples (for lack of a better word) into the holes, but it required some technique to get the old ones out Installing screws into the holes. My technique was to turn the screw like crazy with one hand while the other hand was under the tank holding the gasket in place. It takes some effort but I don't see the need After getting it assembled as best I could I had a bit of a problem aligning the screws with the holes on the tank part and it helped to have someone else look underneath.Once they went into the holes and the gasket is facing the hole, it is sufficient to just press firmly on the bolt inside the tank while gently tightening the nuts. I used a deep end key and it worked fine. This requires very little force as you are simply forcing the nipple to contract. I think it would be very easy to draw. Uses a Koehler fill valve, part GP 1138930 as it was similar to my original. All parts were purchased from Revain and arrived quickly as always. Essentially everything inside the tank is now new and looks the same as when new. The two things I find most helpful. Get accurate recommended Koehler parts and watch multiple U-Tube videos. It's not rocket science, but it does require an understanding of how things work and it takes a bit of muscle to get the bolts into the new nipples. Inserting the inflation valve wasn't difficult at all. As if it should be installed in my tank. The height didn't need to be adjusted, but there was a slight adjustment when the water was in the tank to stay on the top fill line. It would have been good not to change the purge valve, but due to wear and tear there was no choice.
