Review on Highly Accurate Laser Distance Module- ACEIRMC 2Pcs VL53L0X ToF Ranging Sensor Breakout by Wayne Moody

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Used to align robot for cone drop experiment

These worked much better than the ultra-sonic sensors I first tried. The beam cone is much tighter with the VL53L0X. I used two of them attached to arms mounted to the front of the robot. The idea was to drive the robot manually and as soon as the pole is sensed, the robot goes autonomous, self aligns to the pole then drops the cone. Each VL53L0X measures the distance to the pole and when left == right, drop the cone. The reason I use two sensors is that the distance to the pole will change depending on if there is no cone or multiple cones already stacked on the pole, or if different cone sizes are used. These VL53L0X's worked well but I knocked one star off only because there was noticeable sensor to sensor variation. It was consistent though, so it was easily fixed by adding an offset in the code to match them.

Pros
  • 2.The VL53L0 uses ST's FlightSense technology to precisely measure how long it takes for emitted pulses of infrared laser light to reach the nearest object and be reflected back to a detector, so it can be considered a tiny, self-contained lidar system.
Cons
  • The module is fragile and prone to damage if not handled carefully, making it unsuitable for rugged environments
