Review on Quarter Arcades Official Cabinet Numskull by Brian Evans

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Excellent Novelty; Not a very good technical application

I grew up listening to Pac-Man and have had many mini copies and arcade style remakes over the years and this one stood out. Yes, on the outside this arcade copy is actually a talking point and I love having it on my shelf. I am very satisfied with the construction, the quality of the materials and the details, including the ventilation holes on the back, the glowing frame and the coin return slots that are hollowed out, almost like a real Mini. a quarter of a coin could have fallen in from the coin slot. Very impressive reproduction, but I also bought it to play with (probably more than anything else) and the unit I received is lacking in several areas. Perhaps this is my ignorance and if so, my apologies for including it in the review. First, the game is buggy. The picture is great, but every 15 seconds or so it has a "jump" quality. Like a buffering audio clip that catches up with itself and pauses for a wasted second and then picks up where it should be. Here, too, the picture seems to be good just because of the sound. Second, DIP switch settings. The game starts with five paces and an extra life of 15,000. As a purist, it would be nice to be able to reduce these to three and another 10,000 like you can on a real device. This isn't a disadvantage in itself as it doesn't affect gameplay, just worth mentioning and I'd like to know in advance. On the plus side, I'm impressed with the joystick controls. Despite being small I assumed it would be fragile and clumsy, but it's very sharp and responsive which is a big plus (for me). Overall I think it's a great product and I'm leaning towards middle road due to the technical issues I'm having with the game. Thank you for reading!

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Good, but not great
