Sony Quality - Fell off a Cliff

I got this DVD player about 2 years ago Bought 5 years ago. It was used for about three months and then sat on a shelf in our living room for the last two years. I made it last weekend in preparation for a company visit. The DVD player turned on and even opened the drive. However, it repeatedly crashed and froze while loading a drive. After playing with it for a while, I found that the software freezes on the DVD player after a few seconds no matter what. which suggests to me that there is some kind of memory failure in the device. Considering the environment in which this unit was used and stored (my living room shelf) a hardware failure like this can be totally unacceptable. I have a working theory that about five or six years ago Sony traded its usual high-quality subcontractors for cheaper, less reliable subcontractors in an attempt to stem the loss of market share to competitors like Samsung. Manufacturer. While this has allowed Sony to sell Sony-branded products like this DVD player at prices that can compete with Samsung, Cuny, etc., it also means consumers like me. the hidden promise of quality behind the name. are badly burned now. This is the third or fourth Sony product to fail sooner or later. I never thought I'd see the day which my wife's shabby old Panasonic DVD player chugged non-stop for eight (and counting) years. while my new sleek Sony DVD player fails after a few dozen uses. What a strange new world we live in.

Pros
  • Upgrade your DVD collection to near-high quality with an HDMI connection (cable not included)
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
