SMR drive = terrible idea

Western Digital should be ashamed of secretly selling SMR drives. This exit from the gate was very impressive and fast. But once you load data on it, it becomes very slow. The type of disk you need is a CMR disk. SMR drives, I'm no expert and you can research this yourself, but they basically do something like a defragmentation in the background. Once the program is installed or images and videos are moved, it performs a kind of file shuffling many hours later. You can hear the drive running by itself hours and days later for no reason. The task manager doesn't even show the drive with any activity. That's the nature of these discs. I see this drive more as a backup and long term storage on my main system, but next time you buy a CMR style drive you will be much happier.

Pros
  • Good for many
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
