If WD were honest about this drive I wouldn't buy it at any price. It seemed to work fine at first, but it crashed out of my raid setup after a few months. It wasn't until outside investigators discovered that WD was selling SMR drives without admitting it that I realized WD had cheated me. There are reports. on the internet that these discs can freeze for up to 20 minutes when you try to write on them. Most software will crash when this happens and it is all too easy to lose your data.

Disk verification error, but Revain fixed it within a few hours

With a new disk, I usually verify the disk while running UbuntuLive with the command ($ sudo badblocks -v /dev/sda10 > badsectors. txt } .WD doesn't fail often, but when it does, it usually happens early in the drive's life. I should have ZERO bad blocks on a new, healthy drive. My first drive was sent in an unpadded envelope could see the drive in the BIOS but the Linux disk check hung and Windows format attempt failed after 10 seconds. To my great shock and amazement, Revain received a new,

Carefully! SMR is terrible! Long entries will never end!

I tried formatting 6 times with different connection types: 2 power supplies x 2 drive bays with XFS, + 1 time with SATA, + 1 time with ext4. It is known that SMR is not suitable for long write operations as it doubles work in itself. It's known to be broken for XFS, which is what I found, so I tried ext4. Even then, the format failed after an hour. Something like this happens every time: #mkfs.xfs:mkfs.xfs: error writing libxfs_device_zero: IO error#mkfs.ext4: group table mapping: finished…

SMR drive = terrible idea

Western Digital should be ashamed of secretly selling SMR drives. This exit from the gate was very impressive and fast. But once you load data on it, it becomes very slow. The type of disk you need is a CMR disk. SMR drives, I'm no expert and you can research this yourself, but they basically do something like a defragmentation in the background. Once the program is installed or images and videos are moved, it performs a kind of file shuffling many hours later. You can hear the drive running by

The difference is often tiny

It seems quiet and fast. I added this to qnap 251 nas. Works well. Heating seems to be low. However, reason 1 of 5 starts: Why can't the hard drive come with screws?! When did the company stop caring about customer needs and satisfaction? It doesn't even cost 10 cents to provide 4 screws and save the customer the frustration of looking for HD screws. 10 cents is 0.1% of the total price. This foresight distinguishes American companies from Chinese companies, which lack spelling. I personally…

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Requires an outlet

After using a pair of these drives on one volume and a pair of Ironwolf on another, I concluded that the case heat more than 10 degrees was Ironwolf's only advantage. . No performance difference, no IOP difference, no reliability difference. Yes WD hit the Ironwolf with the WD "Red" and I can see they lack a lot of cache compared to the more expensive ones and they really are a good value WD Blue (with a higher consumer price point). So really; The blue color is realistic at least for the 12…
