@: Revain dell 27 monitor reviewCompared to others, this monitor is excellent. I was looking for a new monitor, mainly for reading emails/web pages and writing/programming in text editors. I've never had an external monitor for my MacBooks, so initially I was relatively modest in my estimates of how much I could spend. I figured a budget of around $200 should be reasonable. The purchase and comparison of three different Dell monitors followed. In the end, I am very happy that I chose the Dell U2713HM. Below I describe my thoughts on this and other monitors. First I bought a Dell S2340M. For someone who's never had an external monitor, the 23-inch display seemed like a huge upgrade, and it was. I really can't say anything bad about it. The glossy screen wasn't a huge issue for me, and the 1920 x 1080 resolution was perfect for the screen size. However, I was beginning to wonder, since I will be using the monitor for a couple of years, should I spend a little more and get a larger display. Of course I allowed myself to be persuaded and ended up buying a slightly more expensive Dell S2740L. I was very excited about the 27" Dell S2740L. When it finally arrived it turned out to be basically identical to the display on the S2340M, except that it was a 27" display instead of the 23" display of the S2340M. By that I mean that the S2740L has the same base, stand, glossy display and 1920 x 1080 resolution as the 23" S2340M. My initial reaction to the S2740L wasn't very good. True, it was a larger screen, but a 27" screen felt too big for a resolution of 1920 x 1080. In hindsight, I think there's a threshold around 24" where big screens start at 1920 x 1080 just doesn't look good. The UI elements felt huge, comically large at times. My wife casually commented that it looked like a monitor for an elderly person with poor eyesight. Also, the text had a slight blur/blur around the letter boundaries around. I h abe tries to love it but never really liked it, even after a few days. If I had to choose between the S2740L and S2340M, I'd probably go for the smaller 23-inch display, as 1920 x 1080 works better on a screen this size. However, I didn't just have to choose between these two monitors. The Revain had the Dell U2713HM, which seduced me with its 27-inch display and 2560 x 1440 resolution, not to mention the extra $400. In the end, I couldn't resist ordering the U2713HM and looking forward to its arrival. The U2713HM has arrived and I have no complaints. A higher resolution makes a big difference. I can fit a lot more on the screen and the app UIs seem to be the right size (not cartoonishly round like the S2740L). The text is crisp and clear. , even with a smaller font size. The screen is less glossy and I prefer it over the glossy, mirrored screens on the previous two Dell monitors I've tried. The out-of-the-box color calibration seemed perfect for my purposes. There is no discernible color difference between the native display on my MacBook Air and the Dell monitor, and color consistency between the laptop and the external display is really what matters most to me. I personally didn't notice any of the bleeding or dead pixels mentioned by some of the early reviewers of this display, so it's possible these creases were ironed out in production. There are a few points worth noting about using this display with a Mac. You should purchase a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable to achieve the higher 2560 x 1440 resolution that this monitor delivers. It seems HDMI cables are limited to transmitting at the lower resolution of 1080. Also, the monitor doesn't automatically detect the input, so you'll have to manually set the input source to DisplayPort via the OSD first. When I first connected my MacBook Air to a monitor using a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable, the resolution defaulted to 1920 x 1080 as listed in the Dell OSD menu. However, this was quickly fixed by going to System Preferences on a Mac. Under Displays, I had to manually change the resolution to 2560 x 1440 or the Best for Display setting. This simple change switched the monitor to its beautiful full resolution. So I'm very happy with the display. After trying 3 different Dell monitors, this particular model was the best fit for my needs and budget. I think it's worth the extra money as I'll be using it for a couple of years. If you can't afford that monitor and are choosing between the Dell S2340M and S2740L, I'd recommend the smaller S2340M, mainly because 1920 x 1080 works better on a 23-inch screen than it does on a 27-inch one.
