Perfect for recording your records

This was the second product I bought to convert a stereo analog signal to a digital signal that I could record with Audacity (an open source audio program) on my laptop. The first product I bought was a VTOP USB audio capture card, which isn't a "card" but a small box with inputs and outputs, something like a Behringer UFO202. The problems with the VTOP unit were that (1) I couldn't set the recording levels in Audacity and (2) it didn't record high frequencies very well. If I had done a little more research beforehand, I would have gone with Behringer first, but hey, experience is the best teacher, right? The UFO202 costs about $10 or $12 more than the VTOP, but I can adjust the recording levels as I would expect and it picks up the high frequencies better (above about 13kHz). (In case you're wondering, I recorded the same LP with both units and used Audacity's "Plot Spectrum" feature to plot the recorded frequencies of each. The UFO202 was the clear winner.) In my setup, mine is mine Turntable connected my receiver. The tape coming out of my receiver plugs into the RCA inputs of the UFO202 and the USB connection plugs into my laptop with Audacity installed. That works great. As I use my own receiver I don't use the UFO202's built in phono stage so I can't comment on this feature. Again, since I'm browsing my receiver, I'm using my stereo's speakers to monitor the player, so I haven't used the UFO202's headphone jack feature yet. But it's nice to know that I could use the UFO202 with just a turntable and throw away the receiver if I ever wanted or needed it. Warning: I've noticed that many of the cheaper ADCs (A/D converters like the UFO202 and the VTOP devices we're talking about) advertise features like click removal and noise reduction. You should be aware that these features are features of the free Audacity software and NOT the ADCs themselves. So be careful not to be swayed by the features you get for free, no matter which ADC you end up buying.
