Review on ๐ŸŒฟ GOTS Certified Organic Unbleached Cotton Cheesecloth for Straining - Large 18 Sq.ft., Fine Reusable Strainer by Adan Hudson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very thick, excellent quality, needs a lot of washing the first time

In the end I'm glad I have this product and I'm glad this company is offering this product. Thickness and strength are good for most applications. It's easier to clean up after using it to store herbs and vegetable stock when making chicken soup than the double layer of regular (good quality) cheesecloth I've used before. There is only one layer to work on and it is so thick that it washes/wipes off easily. It also works well in a layer for "dripping" yogurt with a weight on it to make "Greek yogurt" or labneh (something like cream cheese). . It's quite comfortable when wet but not super flexible and doesn't roll as easily as regular gauze. But I'm fine with it, even with my aching hands. When it comes packaged it feels a lot stiffer and bulkier, but softens up nicely when it gets wet. What I'm not so thrilled about is that it took a lot more effort to clean before first use than my other unbleached organic cotton gauze. They all go through an initial wash/boil until the water runs clear, but most release a fair amount of yellow from the cotton into the water, and then the rinse water clears fairly quickly. This made the water very dirty and turbid, and it took me over a day to boil it in new batches of fresh water, trembling and squeezing as I rinsed my hand between boils; then everything again. And again. It took ages to get dishwater that looked clear enough. The photos were taken after I boiled the fabric and then rinsed it *several times* after receiving it. Eventually I got it mostly clean. I'm hoping the company is investigating this as it appears other customers have had similar issues with the initial release of large amounts of dirt into the water and it also sounds like it's not what they were expecting. for their product because they answered people's questions. I don't want anyone to cook with this straight out of the box because it was advertised as ready to eat and ended up having that junk in their food. With all of this, the thickness and quality of the gauze is really good and nothing I've found anywhere else. I also appreciate that it appears to be responsibly produced. I appreciate the GOTS certification and how they seem to go the extra mile to offer an ethically made product. They also appear to be a small company that puts a lot of effort and care into their products and customer service, answering questions etc. Well worth it...just make sure you wash it well first! For company reference, my order was in August 2021.
