Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Denso 221-0517 Radiator: Optimum Cooling Performance for Your Vehicle by Tom Reasons

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Small problems but not a bad product.

I bought this Denso radiator to replace a leaking original radiator in my 2003 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8 and it arrived undamaged and was correct regarding the location of various connectors and touching the mounting holes correctly. My main reason for choosing this over the original was the price. A real Toyota costs just under $400 compared to just over $100. I figured for the price I'd risk it. The reason I only give this product three (3) stars is because of the mounting clips and the fact that it is thinner than the original Toyota radiator. Removing the original radiator and installing the new Denso radiator was quick and easy even though I'm not a mechanic. The problem arose when trying to install the lower radiator screws on the car. There is a lot of play in the Denso designed clamps and while the factory bolts are perfect for holding the factory radiator, they are a bit short for Denso because Denso did a poor job with the clamp design. I don't know why they didn't just weld the nuts onto the brackets like the original. While I managed to get the top screws in with little effort, the bottom screws were a stitch. It basically took a second pair of hands to try and press the clamp against the mount in hopes of getting the screw to engage. In the end I solved this problem by removing the top clips which, after being tightened fairly tight, got closer to each other. This allowed me to hook the bottom screws with the now narrower clamps, making it easier to grab the top clamps since there was more working clearance at the top. I would suggest if your original mounting brackets are in good condition, take a few extra minutes to remove them and use the original mounting brackets on the new heatsink to save yourself a lot of frustration and wasted time. It's as if the difference in thickness between the original and Denso causes the engine to run a little hotter. The difference is negligible and I can't tell for sure as the temp gauge doesn't have actual numbers, but it could be ten to twenty degrees hotter than the real thing. The sensor with the original radiator remained just under half, and with Denso - just over half. All in all, if you need a replacement cooler for your Tundra and are short on cash the Denso is a good option, but if you can shell out the extra money I'd recommend getting the original. It will be interesting to see how long the Denso lasts as the original has been in my truck for 14 years now.
