Didn't work and my iPhone crashed

I may have gotten a bad version of this article, but to put it simply, it didn't work - not at all. The device required MFi certification, but when I plugged the SD reader into my iPhone XR, it looked like it tried to read for a moment, and then everything froze. I tried a few more times and one attempt ended with my phone freezing completely, requiring a forced shutdown and restart. I have the Apple branded version which works great. I was hoping to save some money on a non-Apple brand but ended up returning it for a refund.
