I've been an iPhone photographer for a little over a year: not only do I take photos with my iPhone, I'm really learning about the phone's digital capabilities and significant editing, to get great results. I knew I would always be an iPhotographer, but I also wanted to have something in my arsenal for higher quality images. I immediately thought of DSLRs and bought a Canon Rebel. I hated it! After spending so much time photographing scenes on my quiet and unobtrusive phone, I couldn't stand the bulk and noise of a DSLR (although Canons are known for their smaller size and sound). A few days later I sent the Canon back and started looking again. I came across the Nikon 1 series while reading Steve Huff's blog reviews and was won over. When it arrived I knew within minutes this was the product for me. It's so light, absolutely silent (no sound. Seriously) and the pictures are BEAUTIFUL. I shoot portraits and landscapes and my amateur opinion is that this camera is best for landscapes - it doesn't give portraits that oily/cloudy feel. That being said, I've recently started taking portraits with this camera as part of a personal photography project and the results are great - just different than the style you see on a lot of portrait blogs these days. This camera is great for kids/dogs too: it's so fast it can capture fast movement, and again it's quiet (my dog was horrified by the noise the Canon was making and ran around the corner, which sort of point won). . It's also excellent in low light. I've only used my flash for flash testing, but I've never had to use it in a real-world situation. With a complete lens everything is fine. It is particularly good for landscapes. However, if I could do it all over again I would probably just buy the body and then buy the 1.8 and 2.8 and be done with it. I hate zoom lenses and these two tiny but powerful lenses are all I need. Conclusion: I love this camera. The size of the sensor is a major disadvantage for many people, but it seems to me that 90% of amateur photographers will not bother with this sensor size.
