As the name suggests; this thing is magic. I'm not a fan of chemical filtration unless you have a specific need for it. Activated charcoal is not needed in almost all situations, unless you are removing odors or medication. However, Purigen is an exception here; This material purifies water, removes tannins and retains dissolved organics like nothing else. If you've never used it before, this material is a very, very thin mesh bag full of tiny, tiny, SMALL white beads. You throw that bag in the high flow area of your filter assembly (mine is just above the filter threads in the canister assembly) and snap it. The beads are porous and will pull any solutes out of the water that you don't need. If you have new driftwood in your tank and it looks like "blackwater" due to leached tannins, this stuff will clean it up. If you have a slight haze or cloudiness in your water, it will sparkle in a day or two. It's amazing how well this works, especially since you can see it! When Purigen "runs out," it turns dark brown or deep red, sometimes within a week or two, depending on what and how much it's cleaning. It can then be regenerated and reused, which is admittedly a fairly labor intensive process, like most aquarium maintenance operations. After being regenerated with bleach (which literally burns off all dissolved organic waste) and detoxified with Prime (or equivalent detoxifier), it's ready to go again. I always have several bags of purigen on hand; That way I have a spare in each of my canisters and a sachet or two for when they need to be regenerated. You'll be amazed at how much dirt this thing picks up, even though your tank looks pretty.
