Needs lots of TLC before using

I got this kit in the mail today and started using it. Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review and paid full price for this set. I just want to share my experience with others. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and I crochet knife holder style (as opposed to pen holder style). I have a little Tunisian experience and several sets of Tunisian hooks. I have more sets of hooks than any woman deserves, so I'm familiar with many types of form factors and materials. When you open the packaging, the first thing you notice is the chemical smell. Wow, that's strong! It gave me a headache, and I'm not particularly sensitive to those things. I quickly slipped the whole set into a ziplock bag with a couple of tea towels; I hope the smell goes away soon. I practiced with one of the hooks (5.0mm) and Red Heart Super Saver thread (acrylic #4, worsted) to see how the hooks felt. First, there are a TON of burrs and glue balls that will grab every little strand of your yarn. No, you won't feel them with your hand at first, but your yarn will clump and fall apart regardless of your fiber. I tested several other hook sizes and yarn types and had the same experience. I then took some sanding boards from my medicine cabinet and filed down a few of them, being careful not to change the shape of the hook in the process. It seemed to help a little, but was a little boring. The crochet hooks seem to want to twist a lot in my hand while crocheting. I'm not sure if that's because of my technique or because they're feather light. For other knitters, that might not be such a big deal. To be honest, this isn't a set of hooks that you can use right away when you get it. You need to do a little prep work first to get rid of the burrs and that smell. So think about these issues before buying it as your first Tunisian set or gifting it to your favorite artisan. On the plus side, the price is great, especially for beginners who aren't quite ready to shell out $150 for a set of quality Tunisian hooks. Ultimately, this isn't a bad set, especially for what you're paying. Remember that you must wash this set with love and care before you can use it.
